The use of kenaf fiber can provide mechanical properties, i.e., tensile strength, comparable to those of synthetic fiber with lower density than traditional materials, resulting in lightweight and eco-friendly polymer composites.
The good pulping characteristics and high strength properties of kenaf paper are indicative that kenaf bast pulp and paper are suitable for production of wide range of specialty papers.
Experiments in producing kenaf as a raw material for pulp in the United States showed that the unit costs would be about half of that used in the production of pulpwood and produce 3-5 times as much dry materials for pulping per unit of land annually.

What is Kenaf?
Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) is a plant in the family Malvaceae also called Deccan hemp and Java jute, has high economic value which can be utilised from tip to root with a very wide product diversification such as packaging, carpeting, textile, geotextile, fiber-drain, hardboard, automotive interiors, composites, animal feed, seed oil, etc.
Kenaf can grow to a height of 3.5m to 5.5m in as little as 4 months which provides for a harvest of at least 2.5 times a year alleviating the shortage of forest based raw materials and countering deforestation.
Kenaf, although adaptable to various soils, grows best in well-drained, sandy loam and requires a warm, moist climate, tropical or subtropical, without excessively heavy rains or strong winds, hence its suitability to be grown in Malaysia
